Visual Arts

In the AASK Visual Arts Program, we work in many media – clay, charcoal, pastels, paints of various sorts, 3-dimensional objects and glue. We begin with a 3 to 4 week session in clay which is followed by a session in drawing, then possibly in painting. We return to various media depending on the students’ needs. Hence each year is different. A typical class begins with a short introduction on a particular theme and a practice exercise. For most of the class the students work independently, with guidance as needed or requested. In between sessions of exploring a particular medium, we take a break and go to an art gallery or two. Additionally, 3 or 4 times a year, we invite a local artist for special workshops.

Around Christmas time and especially at the end of the year, we prepare displays of our artwork for AASK events. And for the visual arts ‘Kids’, the year ends with a big group project somewhere in Eagle Place. After which, we all go for ice cream!
